Gaylord National vs MGM National Harbor Pricing | What Event Planners Actually Compare
A practical comparison of Gaylord National and MGM National Harbor event pricing: rooms, space, food and beverage, resort fees, and when each venue costs less.
Compare Gaylord vs MGM Pricing
Neither Gaylord National nor MGM National Harbor publishes a simple public price list for conferences and galas. Event cost is a package: sleeping rooms, meeting space, food and beverage minimums, service charge, tax, resort fees, AV, and labor. The useful comparison is how each venue charges, not a single nightly rate.
Figures below are planning ranges from recent public group rates and menus. Confirm current numbers in an RFP.

What Drives the Bill at Gaylord
Gaylord is priced like a convention resort.
- Sleeping-room commitment is the main lever. A larger block can reduce or eliminate room rental.
- Food and beverage minimums are tied to the ballroom or hall you hold.
- AV, labor, outdoor setup, and décor removal can add five-figure lines on large programs.
- A published example of ancillary meeting-room rental during a citywide event: about $1,500/day with a two-day minimum for a hospitality room, plus F&B and AV.
- Guest-room extras: resort fee and combined tax that has been quoted around 18% on some group bookings.
Gaylord is usually the better value per attendee when you need exhibit space, 20-plus breakouts, and 400+ rooms. It is rarely the better value for a 80-person dinner.
What Drives the Bill at MGM
MGM is priced more like a luxury resort event venue.
- Fewer rooms, so a citywide association meeting will not fit.
- Ballroom and salon rental may appear as its own line if F&B does not cover the space.
- Catering menus are premium. Recent published examples include reception stations around $30, entrée plates around $120–$140, bar packages about $45–$75 per person per hour block, drink tickets around $18, and chef/bartender labor around $250.
- Wedding and social packages show ceremony-space rental starting around $1,500 and hosted-event packages in the mid-$100s to $200s per guest depending on bar inclusions.
- Corporate meetings of 10–500 are the sweet spot the property itself cites.
MGM can cost more per person and still be the cheaper overall venue if you are not paying for unused convention infrastructure.
Rough Planning Math
Use this only as a filter before the RFP:
- Under 150 guests, one room, dinner or meeting: MGM, Westin, or AC Hotel will usually beat Gaylord on total cost.
- 150–400, one ballroom, some rooms overnight: Price both. MGM’s Grand Ballroom and Gaylord’s smaller ballrooms can compete.
- 400+ with breakouts or exhibits: Gaylord. MGM cannot replace the convention floor.
- Split program (sessions at Gaylord, evening at MGM): budget two venue minimums, two AV teams, and transfer time.
Fees People Miss
- Resort fees on every occupied night
- Service charge on food, beverage, and some fees
- Maryland sales tax on food; higher tax on alcohol
- Bartender, chef attendant, and cashier labor
- Parking and overnight self-park or valet
- Outdoor or terrace premiums
- After-hours load-out
These can move a “reasonable” food minimum into a much larger master account.
How This Affects Photography Coverage
Pricing also changes how coverage should be staffed.
- Gaylord conventions: two photographers are often the right budget line.
- MGM dinners and mid-size conferences: one photographer is usually enough.
- If you book both properties in one day, treat them as two venues in the photography estimate.
Get Current Numbers
Ask each venue for:
- Room-block rate and resort fee
- Meeting-space rental vs. waiver threshold
- Food and beverage minimum by room
- Service charge and tax
- AV estimate for your exact set
- Labor and outdoor fees
Then compare total master-account cost, not the room rate alone.
