Some of the most fun events that we’ve documented have involved kiddos. There’s something so exciting about capturing the genuine laughter of a child. When it comes to taking photos of little ones there are a few trade secrets we’ve come across in our 27 years of experience, and a few might surprise you!
Ditch the Cheese-
It’s almost hardwired into kiddos brains that when they hear the word “cheese”, a forced smile spreads across their face. While we adore smiles of all types, nothing can beat a genuine giggle. Try playing a game, or letting them steal the show with some silly dance moves.
Let them be the Photographer –
Kid’s are often uncomfortable with what they don’t understand. At a certain age, they even may be a little apprehensive of the camera it’s self. Try letting them push the button on your camera and watch their face light up (under your supervision of course). Voila! Perfect chance to steal a few candid gems.
Distract them with Games –
This one is quite simple. Have you ever seen a kid playing “Simon Says” with a frown on their face? 😉
Let them Steal the Show-
When they want to dance…dance! When they want to be an astronaut…”Houston, we have no problems!” When they’re in their element, kids tend to shine. Keep in mind though, with shy ones especially, their element might be quietly playing with blocks or sitting looking at a book. Try not to force them into an environment they’re uncomfortable with. In other words, let them steal the show!
